GAMES CAFE
As many of you know, we continued playing board games, bowls and table tennis for a few weeks during the first lockdown but, as restrictions became more difficult, we stopped meeting in the Hall and held one or two games sessions outside. And some people have begun to play board games again in their own homes. Now organiser Sally Hutchinson has emailed…..
“Shall we try a gathering on the playing field? Wednesday 28th July 10.30 to 12, weather permitting. Louise has offered to bring boule again and I promise to let you make your own decision about how close you want to sit and chat this time. I’m sure we’ll all be carrying masks around for a while yet and taking precautions, but we can enjoy some fresh air together, have a catch up chat and consider our future plans, for accessing games – including bowls and table tennis.
So dust off your thermos, find the sun screen – and bring a chair and a smile.”
If you want more information and would like to join in, please ring Sally on 861206.
FLADBURY CRICKET CLUB
Fladbury continued their inconsistent form in the Cotswold Hills League with a defeat at Leek Wootton on Saturday. Chasing a total of 282 posted by the home team, another depleted Fladbury side could only manage 170 all out in reply despite an inspired knock of 95 from Ryan Dixon.
Sunday’s scheduled home match against Blakedown was cancelled by the opposition. It would appear that, despite an earlier start time having been arranged, football mania won the day and they refused to come out to play.
Monday’s game against tourists FAS did go ahead. Having been set a target of 162 from their 40 overs , the visitors paced their reply perfectly and got over the line with 2 overs remaining for the loss of just 2 wickets.
Next Saturday 17 July sees a break in the League calendar with a home friendly against Warwick CC starting at 1.30pm. This is followed on Sunday 18 July by a visit from Clent CC starting at 2pm.

FLADBURY WILL gently RE-CONNECT…..
The planning group for our post-lockdown celebration over the weekend of 7 and 8 August met by Zoom yesterday evening. In the light of the caution urged by the prime minster after the lifting of restrictions on Monday 19 July and government advice, together with the ongoing sharp rise in infections, it was agreed that the big social gatherings – the Saturday evening thanksgiving and party with live music and the garden lunchtime barbeque on Sunday – will not go ahead BUT on Saturday 7 August gardens will be opened, table top and garage sales will be held and boat rides can be booked! Arrangements are also being made for newcomers to be introduced to each other and to longer-term residents and to village activities as they gradually start again. Further information will be circulated soon as Fladbury gently re-connects, with caution!

FLADBURY CRICKET CLUB
A rain affected weekend saw Sunday’s match against Harvington washed out completely without a ball being bowled.
On Saturday a weakened and depleted home side went down to Rowington in a rain affected match of reduced overs. Having been sent in to bat, Fladbury were bowled out for 137 with James Turner once again top scoring with 54. Following an interruption for rain, Rowington were set a revised target of 104 from 30 overs which they reached comfortably for the loss of just 3 wickets.
Sadly, Fladbury were only able to field 9 players for this game and a couple of those were carrying injuries. Under such circumstances there can be little confidence in the team achieving any degree of success. I would like to appeal once again for anyone who would like to play cricket to please make themselves known.
Next weekend sees the League team make the trip to Leek Wooton on Saturday (10 July) while Sunday’s (11 July) game is at home to Blakedown starting at 2pm.
Monday 12 July sees our annual fixture take place at Fladbury against FAS (father & sons) Ramblers – those of the stripy blazers and caps. This match also has a start time of 2pm.

To improve security and safety at the Recreation Ground, we will be installing a permanent, height restriction barrier at the Recreation Ground. This will be much safer than waiting on the road as at present. The barrier should be in place in a couple of weeks.

FLADBURY WILL (Re)CONNECT !
A meeting of the planning group, chaired by Steve Curtis, with Caroline Curtis, Dan Barker & John Powell, Jenny Curtis, Sarah Dangerfield, Mike & Ceirwen Neilan, Martin & Jean Ounsted and me, taking notes, took place yesterday evening, with apologies from Kathleen Bentley, John Bolt, Christine & Graham Farrell, Sue Hildesley and Peter Wagner, whose views were taken into account. It was agreed that it is highly likely the lifting of most restrictions on 19 July will not be postponed and that we will go ahead as soon as possible with our thanksgiving for the end of lockdown, re-connecting with each other in the community and welcoming newcomers. A new date is planned – Saturday 7 August and Sunday 8 August. Some people will be on holiday, the School will be closed, some events will be changed and there will be a re-think if infection rates soar but we are hopeful we will be able to (Re)Connect! Please discuss this with friends and neighbours, give any comments or suggestions to Steve or anyone mentioned above – Steve’s mobile phone number is 07887 953909 or email steve.curtis@AvonReflections.co.uk – and look out for more detailed information in a future email.

FLADBURY CRICKET CLUB
Arriving at the half way point of the season provided a boost and a change of fortunes for Fladbury’s cricketers. On Saturday a fine bowling and fielding performance, including a devastating spell of 4 wickets for only 8 runs by Dave Harris from his allotted 9 overs, managed to restrict Alcester& Ragley to a total of 103 for 8 from their 40 overs. It took Fladbury just 24 overs to reach the target, James Turner once again top scoring by some distance with a splendid 76 not out.
On Sunday Fladbury proved too strong for Romsley& Hunnington The home side, batting first, amassed a huge total of 330 for 6 wickets, including a century for James Turner, a half century for Ryan Dixon and a fine 86 not out from Brent McOmish. The visitors were then dismissed for 129 with Joe Essex finishing with best figures of 3 for 18.
This weekend sees the visit of Rowington CC for Saturday’s (3 July) Cotswold Hills League fixture starting at 1.30pm and on Sunday (4 July) we welcome neighbours Harvington for a 40-over game starting at 2pm.

FLADBURY PARISH COUNCIL
For the second time since the government refused to extend the legislation to allow councils to meet using Zoom or similar, the Parish Council met in person on Monday, June 21st – the longest day. With all the doors and windows open, it was certainly rather cold by 9.00 pm!!
Footway from the Railway Bridge to A44
As you will know, the area immediately north of the railway was surfaced, the drainage sorted and the kerbs replaced a few months ago at the request of the Parish Council. Previously this area was frequently wet, muddy and unsightly. At the time the County Council wanted to resurface the path all the way to the A44. The Parish Council challenged this as we had other priorities for footway renewal and we didn’t believe that spending something like £46,000 of tax payers money on this could be justified as there were other priorities we had identified. One of these was NOT Rectory Green which the County Council decided to do without reference or consultation with the Parish Council.
More recently a significant crack has appeared in the footway on the bridge itself where the bridge deck meets the ground leading up to the bridge. This does require immediate repair and this can be achieved simply and quickly. It should be added that it was not in the original County Council project, not that the council ever provided any evidence to justify their proposals.
Network Rail
The Parish Councils of Fladbury and Charlton meet regularly with Network Rail to discuss the River Avon bridge project. The new section was put in place at the end of May but the shot blasting of the metal structure was postponed because of the nesting birds under the bridge. A licensed ecologist has now given the go ahead for the work. Scaffolding was due to be delivered on Monday, June 21st and work would begin when the scaffolding was in place. Most people will have received a letter from Network Rail because this work is likely to be noisy; it will only be carried during weekdays and will probably last up to five weeks. However, this phase has now been postponed until July 5th because the Avon Navigation Trust need to be in attendance and the 5th is the earliest date they could make.
Ultrafast Fibre Broadband
If you haven’t signed up yet, please do so as the more residents and businesses that express an interest , the sooner the project can begin – please to go to the village website to do so. We are grouped with six other villages in this part of Worcestershire. The contractors, Airband, are planning to hold a number of public drop-in sessions to help explain the process. One will be in Fladbury and as soon as we have a date, we’ll let everybody know.

FLADBURY CRICKET CLUB
On Saturday Fladbury succumbed to a heavy defeat by 9 wickets at league leaders Southam. The home side won an important toss and inserted Fladbury on a wet pitch which proved much easier to bat on as it dried out later in the day.
Sunday’s match at neighbouring Elmley Castle proved to be a much closer run affair in a rain reduced 35 over contest. Brent McOmish top scored for Fladbury with a fine 53, ably supported by Dave Prudden who finished on 49 not out in a total of 172 for 4. Alas it was not to be quite enough as the hosts reached their target with just one over to spare despite commendable bowling performances from Dave Harris and James Turner.
Home matches this weekend! This coming Saturday 26 June Fladbury host Alcester&Ragley in a league fixture starting at 1.30 while Sunday27 June sees the first visit to the village of Romsley&Hunnington with a 2pm start.
It is still proving desperately difficult to get 11 players out on both days at the weekend. Anyone who fancies turning out to play, even if only on an occasional basis, is welcome to make themselves known.

Lychgate Repairs
As many of you will have noticed, work has started on rebuilding the brick walls supporting the Lychgate, which was severely damaged by a car crash in December last year. Once the walls are complete, it is hoped that the new timber frame can be brought to the site and assembled, however, current materials shortages mean that a firm schedule for this work cannot be confirmed at this time.
Keeping In Touch – 74
Including (re)Connecting and Gardeners Wanted
FLADBURY (RE) CONNECTS but…..
because of extension of the government’s road map, reconnection will not be on 3 and 4 July, when the restrictions in place at the moment will still be in place.
This means that the Saturday party on the Green, the Sunday morning gathering on the Green and the Barbeque at the Ounsteds will not be allowed. It has therefore been decided that all the officially planned weekend events – the above and open gardens, the art exhibition in the Hall, craft and flower displays in the Church and table top sales – are postponed until if and when a new date is agreed, perhaps with the same or similar events or some different events – or a whole new way of reconnecting! If you have any comments or suggestions, please let me know and I will share them with the planning group.

FLADBURY CRICKET CLUB
In the only game to take place last weekend Fladbury, batting first, struggled to a total of 142 for 8 – a disappointing performance despite a brave 44 not out from an injured Nick Mytton. The total proved too small in the end however with Tanworth running out winners in the 39th over for the loss of 5 wickets.
Next Saturday 19 June, Fladbury travel to Southam for a fixture in the Cotswold Hills league, while on Sunday 20 June they have a much shorter trip to close neighbours Elmley Castle with a start time of 2pm.
