FLADBURY PARISH COUNCIL

For the second time since the government refused to extend the legislation to allow councils to meet using Zoom or similar, the Parish Council met in person on Monday, June 21st – the longest day. With all the doors and windows open, it was certainly rather cold by 9.00 pm!!

Footway from the Railway Bridge to A44

As you will know, the area immediately north of the railway was surfaced, the drainage sorted and the kerbs replaced a few months ago at the request of the Parish Council. Previously this area was frequently wet, muddy and unsightly. At the time the County Council wanted to resurface the path all the way to the A44. The Parish Council challenged this as we had other priorities for footway renewal and we didn’t believe that spending something like £46,000 of tax payers money on this could be justified as there were other priorities we had identified. One of these was NOT Rectory Green which the County Council decided to do without reference or consultation with the Parish Council.

More recently a significant crack has appeared in the footway on the bridge itself where the bridge deck meets the ground leading up to the bridge. This does require immediate repair and this can be achieved simply and quickly. It should be added that it was not in the original County Council project, not that the council ever provided any evidence to justify their proposals.

Network Rail

The Parish Councils of Fladbury and Charlton meet regularly with Network Rail to discuss the River Avon bridge project. The new section was put in place at the end of May but the shot blasting of the metal structure was postponed because of the nesting birds under the bridge. A licensed ecologist has now given the go ahead for the work. Scaffolding was due to be delivered on Monday, June 21st and work would begin when the scaffolding was in place. Most people will have received a letter from Network Rail because this work is likely to be noisy; it will only be carried during weekdays and will probably last up to five weeks. However, this phase has now been postponed until July 5th because the Avon Navigation Trust need to be in attendance and the 5th is the earliest date they could make.

Ultrafast Fibre Broadband

If you haven’t signed up yet, please do so as the more residents and businesses that express an interest , the sooner the project can begin – please to go to the village website to do so. We are grouped with six other villages in this part of Worcestershire. The contractors, Airband, are planning to hold a number of public drop-in sessions to help explain the process. One will be in Fladbury and as soon as we have a date, we’ll let everybody know.

FLADBURY CRICKET CLUB

On Saturday Fladbury succumbed to a heavy defeat by 9 wickets at league leaders Southam. The home side won an important toss and inserted Fladbury on a wet pitch which proved much easier to bat on as it dried out later in the day.

Sunday’s match at neighbouring Elmley Castle proved to be a much closer run affair in a rain reduced 35 over contest. Brent McOmish top scored for Fladbury with a fine 53, ably supported by Dave Prudden who finished on 49 not out in a total of 172 for 4. Alas it was not to be quite enough as the hosts reached their target with just one over to spare despite commendable bowling performances from Dave Harris and James Turner.

Home matches this weekend! This coming Saturday 26 June Fladbury host Alcester&Ragley in a league fixture starting at 1.30 while Sunday27 June sees the first visit to the village of Romsley&Hunnington with a 2pm start.

It is still proving desperately difficult to get 11 players out on both days at the weekend. Anyone who fancies turning out to play, even if only on an occasional basis, is welcome to make themselves known.
