Latest News on roadworks around Charlton including closure of Main Street in Cropthorne, upcoming 30MPH speed limit on B4084, return of roadworks on A44 and new Highways department works on A44

Severn Trent engineers will be working to repair pipes in Main Street, Cropthorne between Wednesday 19th and Friday 21st February. The road will be closed to through traffic for the duration of the work. The recommended diversion is shown below.

The Evesham Journal reports that roadworks are set to return to a main road for three months after previous work was deemed ‘not to standard’. The report states:

“The work, being carried out by Severn Trent to upgrade a water pipe underneath the A44, will start on January 27 and could last until the end of April.

Traffic lights will appear on the A44 from Salters Lane and gradually move toward Evesham.

In a letter addressed to Severn Trent customers, Paul Hughes, community communications officer at Severn Trent said: ‘We would like to thank you for your ongoing support and patience whilst we carry out our essential work to upgrade the main water pipe along the A44’.

‘The team has completed laying the new water main along the A44.

‘We will be returning after the Christmas break to carry out some reinstatement work on the highway identified as not being to standard.

‘This will start from Salters Lane, Lower Moor and work towards Evesham’.

The company has warned that there may look like little activity is happening at times but said that during those times they could be waiting for materials.

Mr Hughes continued: ‘The work will start on January 27 and we aim to be completed by the end of April.

‘This work will be carried out as before under manually controlled traffic lights.

‘There maybe times where there is little activity within the road works.

‘This maybe when the team are waiting for materials to set/cure so they can move onto the next section of road.

‘Please be aware that although we try to stick to these dates, they may change due to circumstances beyond our control.’

Worcestershire CC Highways department will be imposing a temporary 30MPH speed limit on a section of the B4084, Pershore Road from Monday 3rd February for approximately 1 month while footpath repairs are carried out. The restriction will apply to the section between the junctions with Boston Lane and Lower Haselor.

The traffic lights on the A44 controlling traffic flow in connection with the water pipe replacement by Severn Trent engineers have now been removed, as the work has now transferred to The Squires, where traffic flow is controlled by temporary 2-way traffic signals.

Car accident at Cemetery bridge

A car has severely damaged Cemetery bridge again. The authorities have been informed and Worcestershire Highways department have been requested to make the site safe and ensure that the flow of the Merry Brook into the river Avon is maintained ASAP. Residents are advised to take care when approaching the site.

Footpath Closure extended

Footpaths numbered 520C and 579C were originally closed in February 2024 due to an unsafe bridge. This closure order has now been extended to July 2025, or sooner if the repair work is completed earlier. Alternative routes are shown in the map below.

MP visits Charlton

Nigel Huddleston, MP for mid-Worcestershire visited Charlton yesterday, Tuesday 13th February, in the company of County Councillor Marc Bayliss, member responsible for the economy, infrastructure and skills and senior managers and staff from Openreach following the completion of the project to bring full fibre broadband to the village. Members of the Village Broadband Team were also in attendance.

During the event, the visitors were shown how the delicate fibre optic cables are spliced together during the installation process.

Update on installation of Full Fibre Broadband in Charlton – September 2023

You will no doubt have seen many BT Openreach employees and vans around the village recently who have been installing further parts of the fibre cable system for our Fibre to the Property Scheme. Openreach have confirmed to us that they are now aiming to complete the scheme by the end of November 2023 but this is still subject to them not having any unforeseen problems. Once the build is completed Worcestershire County Council will advise us of the next steps. We hope they might even complete the scheme earlier!

Latest News on installation of Full Fibre Broadband in Charlton – Update from the Charlton Broadband Team

You may have noticed that over the last two months Openreach and their contractors have been in the village planning for the installation of the fibre cables to our houses.

As previously advised  the project is unfortunately running behind schedule mainly due to the popularity of the scheme and the pressure this is putting on Openreach’s resources. However it has been good to
see some action on the ground.

Unfortunately the voucher scheme that we all signed up to with DCMS has expired as they were time limited. We are all about to receive fresh emails which we expect to come from either BDUK, (Building Digital UK), or Gigabit Vouchers <gigabit.vouchers@notifications.service.gov.uk> or Funding Platform
<funding.platform@notifications.service.gov.uk> and will be headed up “UK Gigabit Voucher Scheme – action required”.

These emails should arrive early this week and as before it is important for us all to sign up to these again. If you previously signed up as a business then you should do this again.

Please rest assured that we are not the only community having to undertake this action again. Openreach tell us that plenty of other communities have recently had to repeat this exercise however  the wording of the document has been slightly altered to avoid the need for this to be repeated again.

The project is apparently still on target to be completed around the end of August so your help in promptly responding to the emails in a timely manner would be appreciated.
