A new ‘fraudwave’ of sophisticated new cons have even cyber crime experts falling for them and losing thousands of pounds according to the Daily Telegraph. The number of text scams has risen sharply during the Coronavirus emergency as criminals try to take advantage of the unique circumstances of the pandemic.
According to credit-reporting agency Credit Karma, more than half of Brits (53 per cent) have been targeted by text scams since lockdown began in March last year – and almost a third of us have fallen for them. The average person receives four scam messages a week, it believes.
Hoaxes purporting to be from Royal Mail and PayPal are most likely to have caught us out, but fraudsters posing as the NHS and HMRC are also proving successful. Chances are high that at some point in the past year you’ll have received a message on your mobile enticing, cajoling or scaring you into putting your money at risk.
If you believe you are the victim of a scam, report it to Action Fraud, actionfraud.police.uk.
Suspicious texts should be forwarded free of charge to 7726 – this reports the message to the mobile operator to investigate, and is how such activity gets shut down.
If you’ve been affected, contact thecyberhelpline.com, a volunteer organisation that helps victims of cyber crime.

FLADBURY WILL (Re)CONNECT !
A meeting of the planning group, chaired by Steve Curtis, with Caroline Curtis, Dan Barker & John Powell, Jenny Curtis, Sarah Dangerfield, Mike & Ceirwen Neilan, Martin & Jean Ounsted and me, taking notes, took place yesterday evening, with apologies from Kathleen Bentley, John Bolt, Christine & Graham Farrell, Sue Hildesley and Peter Wagner, whose views were taken into account. It was agreed that it is highly likely the lifting of most restrictions on 19 July will not be postponed and that we will go ahead as soon as possible with our thanksgiving for the end of lockdown, re-connecting with each other in the community and welcoming newcomers. A new date is planned – Saturday 7 August and Sunday 8 August. Some people will be on holiday, the School will be closed, some events will be changed and there will be a re-think if infection rates soar but we are hopeful we will be able to (Re)Connect! Please discuss this with friends and neighbours, give any comments or suggestions to Steve or anyone mentioned above – Steve’s mobile phone number is 07887 953909 or email steve.curtis@AvonReflections.co.uk – and look out for more detailed information in a future email.

FLADBURY CRICKET CLUB
Arriving at the half way point of the season provided a boost and a change of fortunes for Fladbury’s cricketers. On Saturday a fine bowling and fielding performance, including a devastating spell of 4 wickets for only 8 runs by Dave Harris from his allotted 9 overs, managed to restrict Alcester& Ragley to a total of 103 for 8 from their 40 overs. It took Fladbury just 24 overs to reach the target, James Turner once again top scoring by some distance with a splendid 76 not out.
On Sunday Fladbury proved too strong for Romsley& Hunnington The home side, batting first, amassed a huge total of 330 for 6 wickets, including a century for James Turner, a half century for Ryan Dixon and a fine 86 not out from Brent McOmish. The visitors were then dismissed for 129 with Joe Essex finishing with best figures of 3 for 18.
This weekend sees the visit of Rowington CC for Saturday’s (3 July) Cotswold Hills League fixture starting at 1.30pm and on Sunday (4 July) we welcome neighbours Harvington for a 40-over game starting at 2pm.

FLADBURY PARISH COUNCIL
For the second time since the government refused to extend the legislation to allow councils to meet using Zoom or similar, the Parish Council met in person on Monday, June 21st – the longest day. With all the doors and windows open, it was certainly rather cold by 9.00 pm!!
Footway from the Railway Bridge to A44
As you will know, the area immediately north of the railway was surfaced, the drainage sorted and the kerbs replaced a few months ago at the request of the Parish Council. Previously this area was frequently wet, muddy and unsightly. At the time the County Council wanted to resurface the path all the way to the A44. The Parish Council challenged this as we had other priorities for footway renewal and we didn’t believe that spending something like £46,000 of tax payers money on this could be justified as there were other priorities we had identified. One of these was NOT Rectory Green which the County Council decided to do without reference or consultation with the Parish Council.
More recently a significant crack has appeared in the footway on the bridge itself where the bridge deck meets the ground leading up to the bridge. This does require immediate repair and this can be achieved simply and quickly. It should be added that it was not in the original County Council project, not that the council ever provided any evidence to justify their proposals.
Network Rail
The Parish Councils of Fladbury and Charlton meet regularly with Network Rail to discuss the River Avon bridge project. The new section was put in place at the end of May but the shot blasting of the metal structure was postponed because of the nesting birds under the bridge. A licensed ecologist has now given the go ahead for the work. Scaffolding was due to be delivered on Monday, June 21st and work would begin when the scaffolding was in place. Most people will have received a letter from Network Rail because this work is likely to be noisy; it will only be carried during weekdays and will probably last up to five weeks. However, this phase has now been postponed until July 5th because the Avon Navigation Trust need to be in attendance and the 5th is the earliest date they could make.
Ultrafast Fibre Broadband
If you haven’t signed up yet, please do so as the more residents and businesses that express an interest , the sooner the project can begin – please to go to the village website to do so. We are grouped with six other villages in this part of Worcestershire. The contractors, Airband, are planning to hold a number of public drop-in sessions to help explain the process. One will be in Fladbury and as soon as we have a date, we’ll let everybody know.

FLADBURY CRICKET CLUB
On Saturday Fladbury succumbed to a heavy defeat by 9 wickets at league leaders Southam. The home side won an important toss and inserted Fladbury on a wet pitch which proved much easier to bat on as it dried out later in the day.
Sunday’s match at neighbouring Elmley Castle proved to be a much closer run affair in a rain reduced 35 over contest. Brent McOmish top scored for Fladbury with a fine 53, ably supported by Dave Prudden who finished on 49 not out in a total of 172 for 4. Alas it was not to be quite enough as the hosts reached their target with just one over to spare despite commendable bowling performances from Dave Harris and James Turner.
Home matches this weekend! This coming Saturday 26 June Fladbury host Alcester&Ragley in a league fixture starting at 1.30 while Sunday27 June sees the first visit to the village of Romsley&Hunnington with a 2pm start.
It is still proving desperately difficult to get 11 players out on both days at the weekend. Anyone who fancies turning out to play, even if only on an occasional basis, is welcome to make themselves known.

Charlton Parish Council normally meets at 7:30pm in the Old Schoolroom, Ryden Lane, on the second Thursday of alternate months. Meeting agendas are published in advance and posted on the Parish Council noticeboard on the Village green. However, due to current Government Coronavirus legislation requiring that after 6th May 2021 Parish Council meetings cannot be held remotely, these dates cannot be confirmed at this time. An update on future Parish Council meeting dates will be published once a suitable Covid-19 compliant venue is identified.
The Annual Parish meeting previously scheduled for Thursday 13th May will not now go ahead.
Confirmed dates for future meetings:
Thursday 11th November 2021
Thursday 13th January 2022
Thursday 10th March 2022
Annual Parish Meeting 2022 – date TBA
Thursday 12th May 2022
Planning Committee meeting dates are arranged as necessary.
As many of you will have noticed, work has started on rebuilding the brick walls supporting the Lychgate, which was severely damaged by a car crash in December last year. Once the walls are complete, it is hoped that the new timber frame can be brought to the site and assembled, however, current materials shortages mean that a firm schedule for this work cannot be confirmed at this time.
FLADBURY (RE) CONNECTS but…..
because of extension of the government’s road map, reconnection will not be on 3 and 4 July, when the restrictions in place at the moment will still be in place.
This means that the Saturday party on the Green, the Sunday morning gathering on the Green and the Barbeque at the Ounsteds will not be allowed. It has therefore been decided that all the officially planned weekend events – the above and open gardens, the art exhibition in the Hall, craft and flower displays in the Church and table top sales – are postponed until if and when a new date is agreed, perhaps with the same or similar events or some different events – or a whole new way of reconnecting! If you have any comments or suggestions, please let me know and I will share them with the planning group.

FLADBURY CRICKET CLUB
In the only game to take place last weekend Fladbury, batting first, struggled to a total of 142 for 8 – a disappointing performance despite a brave 44 not out from an injured Nick Mytton. The total proved too small in the end however with Tanworth running out winners in the 39th over for the loss of 5 wickets.
Next Saturday 19 June, Fladbury travel to Southam for a fixture in the Cotswold Hills league, while on Sunday 20 June they have a much shorter trip to close neighbours Elmley Castle with a start time of 2pm.
