We have recently been advised by Network Rail that repairs to the brickwork on the underbridge area between Fernhill Farm and the river need to be undertaken. Subsequently representatives of Charlton and Cropthorne Parish Councils and concerned residents held a zoom meeting with Network Rail on the 24thAugust.
They will be working every day between 7am and 6pm from Monday 13 September until Thursday 02 December. Below are some key dates for this project. Please understand that exact times and dates can change with a project like this.
- Monday 13 – Wednesday 22 September Site preparation and compound set up
- Thursday 23 – Monday 27 September Installation of cofferdam and over pumping
- Friday 01 October – Tuesday 19 November Repairs to the bridge’s brickwork
- Weds 24 November – Thursday 02 December Demobilise from site
Network Rail will have a generator, powered tools and an excavator on site, which may generate noise at times. They have tried to arrange their shifts and work to minimise disturbance as much as is possible.
As with the previous Network Rail project on the River Avon Railway bridge that has now been completed large vehicles will access the site via Whitehouse Farm in Ryden Lane and then across to Sidings Lane. Other vehicles will use Sidings Lane and the speed of vehicles will be limited to 5MPH. We have stressed that in the current dusty conditions that this speed is too fast past houses and asked if drivers can slow down further.

Following completion of the last Network Rail project Sidings Lane is in a poor condition with lots of potholes remaining. We had been advised that the potholes would be repaired and are chasing Network Rail to undertake this work.
We are also aware that other Network Rail maintenance is going on in the area leading to other vehicles travelling too fast along Sidings Lane. Our Network Rail contact is liaising with them and seeking to ask them to drive at a reasonable speed.
The following letter has been delivered to all near neighbours to the works:
