Lychgate Repairs Update 31st March 2021

Following further extensive discussions with the insurance company handling our claim, Snape Construction have been appointed to rebuild the Lychgate at Charlton cemetery. The work will be carried out in two stages:

  • Firstly, the Lychgate will be taken down in order to provide a safe interim access to the cemetery for people wishing to tend graves and memorials. This work is expected to be carried out by late April / early May.
  • Secondly, the Lychgate will be rebuilt in a style that resembles the original structure as closely as possible, using green oak timber and bricks manufactured especially for the purpose. Availability of materials and specialist joinery will determine when this can take place, ideally during the second half of this year.

In the meantime, we ask that anyone visiting the cemetery takes care and does not attempt to gain access via the existing structure which remains fenced off.
