FLADBURY CRICKET CLUB

Rain washed out any hope of play in last Saturday’s league fixture at Fladbury and the Sunday friendly was cancelled by the opposition.

Hopefully it will be a different story this weekend with 2 more fixtures scheduled at Fladbury.  Saturday’s game this week is a friendly against Warwick CC and Sunday sees the visit of Poppyfields CC.  Both games are due to start at 2pm. No league game on Saturday is due to a re-organisation of fixtures by the Cotswold Hills League.

One can but hope the torrential downpours we have been experiencing may cease in time for the matches to go ahead.

A VERY BIG THANK YOU….

is what Sue and Rob Hiscocks asked me to say for them in KIT following the devastating fire at their home in Charlton. They are overwhelmed by the generosity, care and love which they have received from people in Charlton and surrounding villages. Sue is sorry she hasn’t thanked people personally – she and Rob, with the help of friends and neighbours, are very busy sorting out the debris remaining in the house. Charlton folk have washed clothes and kitchen utensils and ornaments and transported some furniture to the kind offer of storage facilities. Sadly, Sue and Rob have had to throw in a skip the charred remains of their albums, records and memories of family life and worldwide travels they have enjoyed. They are now hoping for news of where they will be living for the next 12 months for which they will need a settee, armchair, large dining table and chairs, king size bed and double bed, small dresser, lots of coat hangers and a coffee table.

As you can imagine, the paper work which Sue and Rob are having to deal with is huge so if you can help with any of these items, please email in Charlton – jdhawley72@gmail.com –  or me, Jane, in Fladbury – pjbugg@btinternet.com.

GARDENING

·         No mow May – dare you! If you leave the grass on your lawn to grow, wildflowers and weeds will grow too which are essential for our pollinating insects to keep us all alive! Even leaving a small circle or a couple of triangles is good and actually provides some colour and variety and beauty.

CHRISTIAN AID WEEK

As you know, this happens every year in May when we think about poverty-stricken people in the world whose difficulties this year have increased with the effects climate change and the pandemic. Like last year, we are still in lockdown but we can still help by donating money – please see the poster – before “Ongoing” – later in this email.

A note from Bill North…..

Those who were at the burial of Chris in Fladbury Churchyard enjoyed the African chant which the family sang at the end. Having lived in Zambia for a number of years, I was probably the only one who knew the exact meaning of the words. They are very poignant so I’m sharing them…..

“Let’s go together in one spirit, let’s go together in one spirit, let’s go together in one spirit

Let’s go, Granny. Let’s go together in one spirit. “

FLADBURY CRICKET CLUB

Fladbury experienced mixed fortunes at the weekend, winning their first League Match of the season by a margin of 32 runs with Ian Sheppard taking 5 Rowington wickets. On Sunday however they fell to a 109 run defeat at home to Eckington who batted first, amassing a formidable total of 290 in their 40 overs – a daunting target to chase and after falling behind the required rate, Fladbury were eventually bowled out for 181.

Saturday 8th May sees Fladbury entertain Leek Wooton in a Cotswold Hills Div 4 League fixture with a start time of 1.30pm

Sunday’s game is also at home to Bushley, a friendly with a 2pm start.

At time of writing (Wednesday 5th) and weather permitting, the first in a series of midweek 20 over matches is due to take place at 1800 at Fladbury. This is the first in a series of such matches which will continue throughout the season. Next week’s game on Wednesday12th May is an away fixture to Bretforton.

Any potential cricketers out there are welcome to get in touch or come along to the ground on a match day and make themselves known.

Thank you to all but especially Anne and Simone for hosting the event and Heather for her amazing previous plant sales.

FLADBURY PARISH COUNCIL

After 12 months of Zoom meetings, the next Parish Council meeting will be held in person on Monday, May 17th at the Sports’ Pavilion commencing at 7.00 pm.

Although this is the date of the next government milestone, we are now not allowed by law to conduct meetings by Zoom as from May 6th. This is because the legislation brought in last year expires on that day and the government has refused to extend this particular piece of legislation in spite of a High Court challenge.

Some councils have taken the decision not to meet in person as yet due to the reluctance of members to attend an indoors meeting in premises that have not been risk assessed and are not capable of being Covid secure. The pavilion can accommodate the members of the Council, have a one-way system, social distancing, hand sanitising, masks to be worn and ventilation through keeping the main doors open. On this basis all the PC members have agreed to attend

As a public meeting, the public are able to attend but to meet the requirements, any visitors may have to sit outside.

As things stand, the exercise will have to be repeated for the June meeting.

Jo, Liz, Kate and Bill really appreciated and were touched by the many messages received following Chris’s death and by the loving support of those who were able to be at the Churchyard for the burial on Monday. Chris now rests in peace. Thank you all.

HOME TO RENT WANTED

Sue Hiscocks, a Church Reader, was with us in Fladbury Churchyard on Sunday morning. Sue often cycles on her tricycle to be with us from her home in Charlton where she lived with her husband Rob and dog Florence. Some of you will have read or heard about the fire which destroyed their home on Sunday evening. Sue and Rob so appreciate all the kind offers of help they have received and Julian Hawley of Charlton has kindly offered to channel all enquiries and offers of help for them. One of their greatest needs is to rent a property in this area, preferably furnished, where they can live for 12 months with their dog. Please contact Julian if you know or hear of anything which might be suitable – telephone 860420 or email  jdhawley72@gmail.com

FLADBURY CRICKET CLUB

The first game of the season at Fladbury last Sunday resulted in a 52 run victory for the hosts. Batting first, Fladbury scored 199 for 5 and then bowled out Corse Lawn for 147.

This Sunday 2nd May sees a visit to Fladbury from close neighbours Eckington – 40 overs per side starting at 2pm.

20/20 Cricket – For those of you who may prefer the shorter version of the game, there are a series of midweek “20 over” fixtures this season. All these games will be played on Wednesday evening with a start time of 6pm and, to save time, will consist of 15 x 8 ball overs – the first 8 overs being bowled from the same end and the final 7 from the opposite end, again to save time and more importantly daylight. The first match in this series is scheduled to take place at Fladbury at 6pm next Wednesday 5th May against Great Alne. If anyone would like to play in these games, then please contact our midweek captain Richard Hobday on 07763 691367.

Network Rail Update following Zoom Meeting on 27th April 2021

Following yesterday’s Zoom meeting with representatives of Charlton, Cropthorne and Fladbury Parish Councils and concerned residents together with representatives of Network Rail, the following statement was issued via email:

Hi All

Following discussions with the site team this morning and with the help of Network Rail’s Construction Manager for the scheme, the following has been put in place:

  • 5mph signage has been erected including a notice that all HGV’s must use Whitehouse Farm where we now have a watchman / gateman in place.  The stone lorry which used Sidings Lane this morning appears to have slipped through the net.
  • R&W Rail have reiterated with their stone supplier the route to be taken to site this morning.
  • A water bowser will be on site from tomorrow, to supress any dust caused by our vehicles.

Yesterday, it was noticed that on Sidings Lane a tractor travelled down this road causing a plume of dust.

It would be appreciated that where there are any instances of the site speed limit not respected then the vehicle registration would be useful to confirm they are involved with the works and discussion will be had with them reminding them of the site rules.

I sincerely hope that this will be the end of the issues you and the residents have been experiencing.

Best wishes

Matthew Thompson, Communications Manager, Network Rail

Please also note the new email address to which any complaints regarding vehicles and contractors working on the Fladbury site should be addressed as detailed in an earlier post on this website. Emails should be headed “Fladbury Project” in order to ensure that they reach the correct person in Network Rail.

Any concerns about driving issues on public roads should also be reported to the local Police by dialling 101. In this case, you will definitely need to include registration details of the vehicle involved and the date & time of the incident. Obviously video footage from a dashcam etc. would be very useful.

Network Rail – Complaints About Lorry Movements Around Charlton Village

As previously reported, Network Rail have agreed to instruct their drivers and contractors to take special care when driving through Charlton Village. They have agreed that all Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) should access the site via Ryden Lane and Whitehouse Farm, and that only light vehicles should be using Sidings Lane. All drivers should obey a voluntary 20MPH speed limit when driving on Village roads, and 5MPH when driving on site.

If anyone has any complaints regarding the conduct of vehicle drivers, please email:

crwest@networkrail.co.uk

Emails should be headed “Fladbury Project” in order to ensure that they reach the correct person in Network Rail, and should include full details of the incident you are complaining about, including location, date and time of the incident, and if possible, the registration number of the offending vehicle, and copy Roger Davies, Chair of Charlton Parish Council and Richard Sims, vice-chair.

Any concerns about driving issues on public roads should also be reported to the local Police by dialling 101. In this case, you will definitely need to include registration details of the vehicle involved and the date & time of the incident. Obviously video footage from a dashcam etc. would be very useful.

CHURCH NEWS

Tolling Bells for Prince Philip – many thanks to Martin Ounsted in Fladbury Church and Rob Sadler in Cropthorne Church for each tolling a bell for Prince Philip before his funeral last Saturday. In Fladbury, Martin tolled the bell in Fladbury 99 times….

Public Worship – we are so very pleased to resume public worship at Fladbury church this  Sunday 25th April with a Morning Service at 11.00am. There will be a Service of Holy Communion on Sunday 2nd May at Fladbury church at 11.00am.

Services will be held following Covid 19 Guidance which includes mandatory face coverings (unless exempt under the government rules), social distancing, hand sanitiser being available, and NHS Test and Trace recording.

Vocations Sunday for the Church of England is this Sunday 25th April. Vocation means what you are called by God to be and do. Traditionally this Sunday is regarded as an opportunity to explore the calling to ministry. However, for many, their vocation is what they are already doing in their job now. This maybe in employment or as self-employed, or in a voluntary role and it is frequently where much time is spent. It is vital that we recognise that we serve God through faithful discipleship in all aspects of our life, including the time spent in paid or unpaid work. The Diocese of Worcester are organising an online workshop on Wednesday19th May 2021, 7pm – 9pm and repeated on Thursday 10th June 2021, 7pm – 9pm, exploring Everyday Faith at Work. For more information and to register, see here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/everyday-faith-in-work-tickets-144389941201 or see the attached flyer.

The Service of Thanksgiving for Chris North will take place at Fladbury church on Monday 26th April at noon. Chris will be received into church with prayer at 11.15am. The service at noon is required by Covid guidance to be private, though Bill and family shall be pleased to see friends present near to the churchyard, socially distanced. Our prayer is with Bill, Kate, Liz and Jo and their whole family.

Donations are invited for St. Francis Hospital Katete, Zambia, which Chris and Bill often visited, having once lived in Zambia.  These may be sent to E Hill & Son, Funeral Directors, Defford Road, Pershore. Worcs. WR10 1HZ or given online through the hospital Just Giving Page – https://www.justgiving.com/zacct.
