AND IT’S SHROVE TUESDAY…..

before Ash Wednesday! As a tiny schoolgirl (a very long time ago), we used to say “Pancake Tuesday is a very happy day. If we don’t have a holiday, we’ll all run away”. Those were the days – dream on!

GREETING CARDS

·         I know lockdown gives us time to do things but I have only just got round to sorting out the Advent and Christmas card and candle sales from my front porch. From the profit made, I was able to give donations to Fladbury Church, Centrepoint for homeless young people and Amnesty. Many thanks to all who purchased goods from me, Jane

·         Denise Paxford of Broadway Lane raised £170 from the sale of the cards she makes and candles for the Duchenne Family Support Group. Denise thanks all who bought from her. She is making all occasion cards – telephone 860901

·         Last year I purchased Easter cards to sell but lockdown arrived and the cards were trapped in the church. I now have the cards – if anyone would like to buy some, please contact me, Jane, by email or ring 860531. I am sure we can arrange delivery or takeaway!

The TELEPHONE BOX MINI-LIBRARY

Many thanks to all who offered to help with the running of the mini-library, as mentioned in last week’s KIT. The response is such good news. The bad news is that during lockdown it should be closed – which it now is. It was rightly brought to our attention that we are breaking the law by encouraging people to use this facility. Parish Councillor Sandy Insall is in touch with the group of volunteers who offered to help and plans are being made to sort it out as soon as we are allowed to be out and about and we can enjoy this popular facility again.

Tesco, Asda, Aldi and more: latest rules on cash payments

Following recent press reports of shoppers being refused the option to pay for their shopping with cash, The Evesham Journal has provided the following summary of the payment rules from all of the major local supermarkets.

Asda

Asda is encouraging contactless shopping using its scan and go machines across all of its stores, in a bid to speed up transactions and reduce customer and staff contact.

The brand has rolled out ‘Scan and Go’ mobile to all of its supermarkets, superstores and supercentres, allowing shoppers to use their own device to scan their shopping and pack as they go.

Contactless payments now have a payment limit of £45.

Sainsbury’s

Sainsbury’s has said that customers who choose to pay by cash should use the self-checkouts, so as to avoid any exchanges at the tills.

A spokesperson for the store said: “We would like customers to pay by card. If you would like to pay by cash, please use our self-service tills.

“SmartShop is available in Sainsbury’s supermarkets and helps you spend less time in store and reduces contact by letting you scan your own shopping and check out through a dedicated till area.”

Tesco

Tesco does not have any rules on refusing cash payments, but said it is focused on “ensuring everyone can get the food they need in a safe environment”.

The supermarket has various safety measures in place in stores, including screens and mandatory face masks, based on the latest government guidance.

Morrisons

Morrisons has not introduced a ban on cash payments, but all digital orders must be paid for at the online checkout.

For online shopping, the supermarket said: “We can’t accept cash or cheques, so all payments must be made by card.”

Aldi

Alid is encouraging shoppers to pay for items using contactless card payments in all stores where possible, although cash payments will not be refused.

Lidl

Lidl has not announced any specific rules on cash payments, meaning shoppers will be able to pay by cash if needed.

Proposed Project to Upgrade The Old Schoolroom

The trustees of the Joseph Baker Workman Charity, which manages the Charlton Old Schoolroom, are proposing to further develop the building as a village asset by improving and upgrading the facilities.

Currently the building is used by the community as a village hall for events and social gatherings and provides a venue for the local Pre-school and Scout group. It is also available for regular use by community groups and organisations, including an elderly residents’ group and for private functions.

The project would involve constructing a new extension at the front of the building, enabling the addition of larger, improved toilet facilities with new disabled and mother/baby facilities. The space created by this new extension would then allow us to make further internal improvements including the provision of a modern, larger kitchen area and a new corridor and fire exit, providing improved access for disabled people, children and the elderly. We would also re-lay the very uneven driveway to provide better and safer access with better parking facilities for disabled visitors. We also plan to replace some of the tables and chairs together with the very old curtains in the main hall. Initial outline plans are shown below.

The trustees and the Parish Council believe that the proposed improvements would greatly benefit our many users and the village as a whole and are intending to apply for a Wychavon Council grant to fund the project. We have already received confirmation that this is the type of project for which they may approve funding. However, before we go ahead with a formal application, it is important that we consult with residents to understand whether they agree with and support the project.

Thank you in advance for your feedback, which is much appreciated,

Committee of the Joseph Baker Workman Charity

New Advice on How to Avoid Being Scammed

Regrettably criminals are trying to take advantage of the Coronavirus lockdown by introducing new and ever more convincing scams. The Metropolitan Police have published “The Little Book of Big Scams”, and you can download a copy here:

Download

the-little-book-of-big-scams.pdf
Adobe Acrobat document [2.7 MB]

Although it’s quite a big publication, it’s worth reading thoroughly as it contains a wealth of advice on how to recognise a number of scams and consequently how to avoid being caught out.

Bridge Repairs at Cemetery Corner

Contractors from Worcestershire County Council have started work to repair the bridge at Cemetery Corner in the Village. Consequently there is a 3-way traffic control and traffic lights at the junction of The Strand, Church Leys and Mill Bank to protect the workforce. The estimated duration of the repair work is 3 weeks, but it is hoped that it will be finished sooner and the traffic control removed.

Coronavirus Vaccination News

Mark Goodge has relayed this important message from the Vale of Evesham Primary Care Network:

Important message for patients at Abbey Medical Practice, Barn Close Surgery, Bredon Hill Surgery, DeMontfort Medical Centre, Grey Gable Surgery, Merstow Green Medical Practice and Riverside Doctors’ Surgery.

Over the next couple of weeks, these practices will be inviting 70 ~ 74-year old and Clinically Extremely Vulnerable patients to be vaccinated against COVID-19 at the Riverside Surgery vaccination hub.

If we have a mobile number on file for you, you’re likely to receive this invite by text – but it won’t look like our usual messages. It will however contain your surgery name, and will ask you to read through some information on our website before booking using your link.

You’ll need to enter your date of birth in order to book – but you won’t (and will never) be asked to provide any bank details or any personal identity documents. If you ever receive anything asking for this, do not provide it, as it’s almost certainly fraudulent – so please be careful!

If you don’t have a mobile number on file with your practice, please don’t worry – you won’t be left out. Practices will be calling those patients directly in order to book them in, so please wait to be contacted by your surgery.

In time we hope to provide vaccinations at all seven practices – but for the time being, please ensure that you go to Riverside Surgery for your appointment once it’s booked.

We and all our surgeries are grateful for the continued support of our wonderful local community – so thank you for your patience and enthusiasm as we roll out this life-changing vaccine across the Vale of Evesham.

More Scams Reported

Unfortunately more scams are being reported as criminals try to take advantage of the Coronavirus emergency and current lockdown.

People are receiving texts purporting to be from the NHS saying that they are eligible for a Coronavirus vaccination, and asking for personal details including credit cards. As we all know, the vaccine is free and the NHS would never ask for payment details to arrange an appointment.

A similar scam is also being operated via telephone calls.

Please be on your guard at all times and don’t let the scammers win.
