Lychgate Repairs Update 14th May 2021

As you will have probably noticed, scaffolding has been erected around the Lychgate at the cemetery. Snape Construction will be starting work to take down the damaged Lychgate structure w/c Monday 17th May. Materials for re-use will be removed and stored safely off site, and any remaining debris will be removed and disposed of. Following completion of this activity, there will be a safe interim access to the cemetery for people wishing to tend graves and memorials.

The replacement wooden structure will be fabricated off-site in Snape’s joinery shop and the intention will be that the rebuild will commence some 12 to 15 weeks later, i.e. around mid-late August.

During the demolition and subsequent rebuilding of the Lychgate, we ask that people delay tending graves and memorials until the site is safe again. During the period between the lychgate being taken down and reconstructed, please take extra care and comply with any site rules put in place by Snape Construction.

Additional Car Parking Spaces at Cropthorne and Charlton Village Hall

Work is expected to start next week (17th May) on additional parking and safety improvements on the access to the Sheppey from Blacksmiths Lane (Church End). The parking surface will be in the form of a mesh through which grass can grow. Plans are attached but should anyone have queries then please email John Grove, Chairman Cropthorne and Charlton Village Hall, at chairman@ccvh.co.uk

FLADBURY CRICKET CLUB

Rain washed out any hope of play in last Saturday’s league fixture at Fladbury and the Sunday friendly was cancelled by the opposition.

Hopefully it will be a different story this weekend with 2 more fixtures scheduled at Fladbury.  Saturday’s game this week is a friendly against Warwick CC and Sunday sees the visit of Poppyfields CC.  Both games are due to start at 2pm. No league game on Saturday is due to a re-organisation of fixtures by the Cotswold Hills League.

One can but hope the torrential downpours we have been experiencing may cease in time for the matches to go ahead.

A VERY BIG THANK YOU….

is what Sue and Rob Hiscocks asked me to say for them in KIT following the devastating fire at their home in Charlton. They are overwhelmed by the generosity, care and love which they have received from people in Charlton and surrounding villages. Sue is sorry she hasn’t thanked people personally – she and Rob, with the help of friends and neighbours, are very busy sorting out the debris remaining in the house. Charlton folk have washed clothes and kitchen utensils and ornaments and transported some furniture to the kind offer of storage facilities. Sadly, Sue and Rob have had to throw in a skip the charred remains of their albums, records and memories of family life and worldwide travels they have enjoyed. They are now hoping for news of where they will be living for the next 12 months for which they will need a settee, armchair, large dining table and chairs, king size bed and double bed, small dresser, lots of coat hangers and a coffee table.

As you can imagine, the paper work which Sue and Rob are having to deal with is huge so if you can help with any of these items, please email in Charlton – jdhawley72@gmail.com –  or me, Jane, in Fladbury – pjbugg@btinternet.com.

GARDENING

·         No mow May – dare you! If you leave the grass on your lawn to grow, wildflowers and weeds will grow too which are essential for our pollinating insects to keep us all alive! Even leaving a small circle or a couple of triangles is good and actually provides some colour and variety and beauty.

Covid-19 Restrictions Eased From 17th May 2021

Following the announcement by the Prime Minister yesterday, The Evesham Journal has produced a helpful summary of the new rules applying to residents of England from 17th May. Announcements regarding Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are expected shortly.

A HOST of Covid-19 restrictions will be eased from May 17. Here’s the full list following prime minister Boris Johnson’s announcement today.

WORK

You should continue to work from home if you can. When travelling within the UK, you should aim to do so safely and plan your journey in advance.

GATHERINGS

Gathering limits will be eased.

Outdoor gatherings will be limited to 30 people and indoor gatherings will be limited to six people or two households, including overnight stays.

BACK TO THE PUB!

Indoor hospitality venues such as restaurants, pubs, bars and cafes can reopen.

HUGS

New guidance on meeting loved ones will emphasise personal responsibility rather than government rules.

Instead of instructing you to stay 2m apart from anyone you don’t live with, you will be encouraged to exercise caution and consider the guidance on risks associated with Covid-19 and actions you can take to help keep you and your loved ones safe.

Guidance on gov.uk reads: “Remember that the risks of close contact may be greater for some people than others and in some settings and circumstances, there will be specific guidance that you will need to follow even when you are with friends and family.”

WE CAN GO OUT (YES, EVEN TO GO IN)

Indoor entertainment and attractions will be permitted to open with Covid-secure measures in place.

They include:

  • Cinemas
  • Theatres
  • Concert halls
  • Bowling alleys
  • Casinos
  • Amusement arcades
  • Museums
  • Children’s indoor play areas

THE GREAT OUTDOORS – INLCUDING FANS AT LIVE SPORT

People will be able to attend indoor and outdoor events, including live performances, sporting events and business events.

Guidance on gov.uk reads: “Attendance at these events will be capped according to venue type, and attendees should follow the Covid-secure measures set out by those venues.”

PLAYING SPORT…

Organised indoor sport will be able to take place for all (this includes gym classes). This must be organised by a business, charity or public body and the organiser must take reasonable measures to reduce the risk of transmission.

UK HOLIDAYS

All holiday accommodation will be open, including hotels and B&Bs, for groups of up to six or two households.

WEDDINGS, FUNERALS AND CHRISTENINGS

Funeral attendance will no longer be limited to 30 people but will be determined by how many people the venue can safely accommodate with social distancing.

Limits at weddings, wakes and other commemorative events will be increased to 30 people. Other significant life events, such as bar/bat mitzvahs and christenings, will also be able to take place with 30 people.

CARE HOME VISITS

The rules for care home residents visiting out and receiving visitors will change, allowing up to five named visitors but only two can attend at any one time. They must test negative for Covid-19.

UNIVERSITIES

All higher education students will be able to access in-person teaching.

SUPPORT GROUPS

Support groups and parent and child group gathering limits will increase to 30 people (not including under 5s)

OVERSEAS TRAVEL

There will no longer be a legal restriction or permitted reason required to travel internationally.

There will be a traffic light system for international travel, and you must follow the rules when returning to England depending on whether you return from a red, amber or green list country.

You can read the full text of the guidance issued by the Government here:

https://www.gov.uk/coronavirus

CHRISTIAN AID WEEK

As you know, this happens every year in May when we think about poverty-stricken people in the world whose difficulties this year have increased with the effects climate change and the pandemic. Like last year, we are still in lockdown but we can still help by donating money – please see the poster – before “Ongoing” – later in this email.

A note from Bill North…..

Those who were at the burial of Chris in Fladbury Churchyard enjoyed the African chant which the family sang at the end. Having lived in Zambia for a number of years, I was probably the only one who knew the exact meaning of the words. They are very poignant so I’m sharing them…..

“Let’s go together in one spirit, let’s go together in one spirit, let’s go together in one spirit

Let’s go, Granny. Let’s go together in one spirit. “

FLADBURY CRICKET CLUB

Fladbury experienced mixed fortunes at the weekend, winning their first League Match of the season by a margin of 32 runs with Ian Sheppard taking 5 Rowington wickets. On Sunday however they fell to a 109 run defeat at home to Eckington who batted first, amassing a formidable total of 290 in their 40 overs – a daunting target to chase and after falling behind the required rate, Fladbury were eventually bowled out for 181.

Saturday 8th May sees Fladbury entertain Leek Wooton in a Cotswold Hills Div 4 League fixture with a start time of 1.30pm

Sunday’s game is also at home to Bushley, a friendly with a 2pm start.

At time of writing (Wednesday 5th) and weather permitting, the first in a series of midweek 20 over matches is due to take place at 1800 at Fladbury. This is the first in a series of such matches which will continue throughout the season. Next week’s game on Wednesday12th May is an away fixture to Bretforton.

Any potential cricketers out there are welcome to get in touch or come along to the ground on a match day and make themselves known.

·        PLANT SALE THANKS – Thank you very much to everyone who supported our Alzheimer’s Research fund raising plant, cake and craft sale on Saturday. Thank you to all but especially Anne and Simone for hosting the event and Heather for her amazing previous plant sales.
Anne Rixom has put a table in her drive with some remaining plants and an honesty box.

FLADBURY PARISH COUNCIL

After 12 months of Zoom meetings, the next Parish Council meeting will be held in person on Monday, May 17th at the Sports’ Pavilion commencing at 7.00 pm.

Although this is the date of the next government milestone, we are now not allowed by law to conduct meetings by Zoom as from May 6th. This is because the legislation brought in last year expires on that day and the government has refused to extend this particular piece of legislation in spite of a High Court challenge.

Some councils have taken the decision not to meet in person as yet due to the reluctance of members to attend an indoors meeting in premises that have not been risk assessed and are not capable of being Covid secure. The pavilion can accommodate the members of the Council, have a one-way system, social distancing, hand sanitising, masks to be worn and ventilation through keeping the main doors open. On this basis all the PC members have agreed to attend

As a public meeting, the public are able to attend but to meet the requirements, any visitors may have to sit outside.
