REST IN PEACE
· A service of thanksgiving for the life of Rob Speed was held in Fladbury Church on 27 July. During the service, we learned that, when Rob was a pupil at Taunton school in the late fifties, two otters were adopted and the then biology teacher, who later founded Somerset Wildlife Trust, encouraged Rob to care for them. Such was the care Rob gave them, he appeared on BBC television with the otters and Rob had an interest in otters for the rest of his long life. Donations of over £100 were collected for the Somerset Wildlife Trust. Rob and Elaine’s family thank everyone for their support, including cards and messages, for attending the service and giving donations.
· Ann Champion, wife of the late John Champion, a former rectory of Fladbury, died at home in Pershore last Friday 30 July. Their daughter Lucy wishes it to be known that her funeral is on Wednesday 18 August at 2pm at Pershore Abbey, followed by 3pm at Fladbury Crematorium and then back to Pershore for some refreshments, venue to be confirmed. Her ashes will be buried in John’s grave in Fladbury churchyard, hopefully in September.
FLADBURY gently RE-CONNECTING…..

If you haven’t received either of these, please let me, Jane, know – tel: 860531, email pjbugg@btintenet.com
And two late amendments – there will be no table top at Spring Cottage in Lazy Lane but there will be a table top at 23 The Chantry – Gwyneth Thomas selling all sorts of bric-a-brac, including some hand knitted articles – weather permitting!

FLADBURY CRICKET CLUB
Saturday’s league match at Stratford was abandoned due to rain after less than 10 overs, with Fladbury having been sent in to bat, on 44 for 1. Sunday’s game in Worcester against Old Vigornians went ahead although reduced to 35 overs per side, despite torrential rain earlier in the day.Following splendid opening spells of 4 for 41 from Dave Harris and 3 for 36 from Will Wade, the King’s School alumni were at one point reduced to 16 for 6.Unfortunately the remainder of the Fladbury bowling attack could not quite match up, with the result that OVs staged a remarkable recovery to eventually post a total of 194 all out. A spirited 49 from 48 balls from Will Wade made for a very promising start to Fladbury’s reply together with a solid but pedestrian half century from Dave Prudden. Once Wade had departed the run rate lost its impetus and once again left too much to do with too few resources, Fladbury finishing 35 runs short on 160 for 7.
This weekend both fixtures are at home, with Welford on Avon the visitors on Saturday 7 August in the League starting at 1.30pm followed on Sunday 8 August by a match starting at 2pm against Flyford Flavell.

FLADBURY PARISH COUNCIL
The Coal Wharf – ‘Jacksons’ Compound – The Parish Council were approached by the Environment Agency at the beginning of the year because there was the necessity to carry out work on the old sluice near the Coal Wharf next to Fladbury Mill. At the time it seemed quite urgent but then things seemed to be downgraded. However, they came back to us a couple of months ago with a timetable for the project. They will be removing the old wooden sluice which we will retain as a museum piece on the Coal Wharf and the space will be infilled with concrete. This requires some draining, some underwater work etc etc. Access is from the Coal Wharf which is owned by the Parish Council hence the need to consult with us. The work should take about four or five weeks to complete. Meanwhile the area is closed and they have installed alarms and CCTV to protect their kit.
Recreation Ground – The new height restriction barrier at the entrance was installed last Monday. Additional work to the fence and the old gate is planned together with a replacement for the old ‘kissing gate’ to facilitate safer access.
Next Meeting – The PC does not meet in August and so the next meeting will be at 7.00 pm on Monday, September 20th in the pavilion.
Chair – Ian Southcott, tel: 861061, email: iandjsouthcott@aol.com

And finally, KIT – what do you think?
This is KIT number 81. I circulated Keeping In Touch No.1 on 18 March 2020, the beginning of the first lockdown, when we decided that we could no longer publish and circulate the community magazine Five Alive. KIT itself and the mailing lists have got longer, including printed copies for people without computers – and the time it takes me to do it has got longer. From September, I am thinking of producing a monthly KIT until the end of the year. And then what? What do you think? Please let me know. Meanwhile, let’s re-connect!

People are asking about “Jacksons Compound” set up on land adjacent to Fladbury Mill.
Apparently the Environment Agency need to carry out work on the old sluice at the end of the coal wharf. Jacksons will be removing the old wooden sluice which will be retained by Fladbury Parish Council (who own the land) as a museum piece and the space will be infilled with concrete. This requires some draining, some underwater work etc.
The work is expected to take about four or five weeks to complete. Meanwhile the area is closed and alarms and CCTV have been installed to protect the kit.
The repair work on the railway bridge over the River Avon at Fladbury is drawing to a close. The scaffolding on the bridge piers is being progressively dismantled and removed from the site. All works are expected to be completed by the end of August and the footpath under the bridge is planned to be re-opened on Friday 6th August.
You will have seen that the brick walls supporting the Lychgate have now been rebuilt. Access to the cemetery is now possible via this entrance and there is no need to clamber through the hedge. Difficulty in sourcing the green oak timber required to rebuild the Lychgate is delaying the project. Once we have an update from the builder regarding the timber frame fabrication we will publish the news on this website.

FLADBURY CRICKET CLUB
· With the recreation ground temporarily closed to vehicles, and with parked cars causing chaos to through traffic last Saturday along Station Road, there was a similarly chaotic aspect to Fladbury’s cricket in their CH League match against Henley in Arden. The visitors batted first and posted a daunting total of 295 for 6 following the home side’s scrappy and undisciplined performance in the field. Set a revised target of 266 from 36 overs due to rain interruptions, Fladbury could only manage 182 for 8 despite another excellent 100 from Turner. It is very rare for any player to score 100 and to finish on the losing side.
The venue for Sunday’s game was changed with Fladbury travelling to Leamington. In a low scoring contest the hosts were bowled out for 128, Dave Harris being the pick of the Fladbury bowlers with figures of 4 for 23. In reply, half centuries from both Prudden and Turner managed to see Fladbury scrape home by 1 wicket with little contribution from anyone else – a victory all the same.
· Both of next weekend’s fixtures are away, with Saturday’s league match at Stratford Bards followed by a trip to Worcester on Sunday to play Old Vigornians.
· The next game to be played at Fladbury is on Thursday 5th August when we welcome our annual touring visitors from Penn Street to a 40 over contest starting at 2pm.
· There is still a call out, even at this comparatively late stage of the season, for any potential cricketers to make themselves known. The Club is still desperately short of players.

BUSES – UPDATE
An apology has been received from the manager of Tesco regarding the withdrawal of the concessionary bus service. It seems that passengers should have been notified but this did not happen. Basically, even prior to the pandemic, the service was unsustainable and a reprieve is highly unlikely. The provision of a community bus to allow shopping trips, or even possibly excursions, continues to be investigated. However we need to see a good number of people from Fladbury or our neighbouring villages who would commit to supporting it. You can register your interest with John Bolt (860768) or Jane Bugg (860531).

FLADBURY SCHOOL
It has been so good to see the children coming and going from school and playing again in Pool Garden in Farm Street. They broke up for the summer holidays yesterday and the children return to School on Monday 6 September.
The brand new mosaic, designed by the children and created by Jackie Nash with a little bit of help from the children, was going to featured in our celebratory weekend at the beginning of the month but can now be seen, during the summer holidays, on the wall at the children’s entrance.
Every good wish to all school staff, parents and children in all our schools for happy holidays after a very tough year.

· There will be a Service of Celebration for the life of Rob Speed on Tuesday 27th July at 12noon at St John the Baptist’ Church, Fladbury. Elaine and her family will be pleased for those who would like to attend the service, to let Philip Speed pkrs1@outlook.com know in advance and before Saturday 24th July because, in the interests of maintaining some social distancing, numbers will be restricted. They will also be pleased for people who would like to show their respects to gather in the churchyard or near the church.

FLADBURY CRICKET CLUB
In the baking heat of last weekend, Fladbury managed 2 comfortable home wins over opposition from Warwick and Clent. The Saturday game saw a team from Warwick CC win the toss and elect to bat only to lose their top 4 wickets for just 6 runs. There was then something of a recovery which allowed them to post a total of 161 for 8 from their 40 overs. In reply Fladbury reached their target for the loss of just 2 wickets in the 27th over. No discussion was needed about who was Man of the Match with James Turner returning bowling figures of 4 for 16 and then brutally destroying the Warwick attack with a chanceless 111 not out. He is now approaching 1000 runs for the season. In a low scoring contest on Sunday Clent, batting first, were bowled out for a dismal 79 with Nick Mytton recording figures of 5 for 17. Fladbury’s reply faltered at the start stumbling to 14 for 5 wickets before Prudden and Turner steadied the ship to finish the job with a 5 wicket victory.
Two more home games are scheduled for the coming weekend. Cotswold Hills League duties resume on Saturday 24 July with a 1.30pm start against visitors Henley in Arden while on Sunday 25 July, starting at 2pm, Leamington Lemmings provide the opposition.

FLADBURY PARISH COUNCIL
Recreation Ground
The entrance to the Recreation Ground will remain barred for another couple of weeks at least. Our new, purpose built, height restriction barrier has been delayed – the supplier has too many staff pinged! We also plan to have a more substantial bar across where the chain is currently deployed. We are also looking at replacing the kissing gate with a more conventional gate to facilitate pedestrian access further away from the bridge which will make it easier for those with pushchairs, wheelchairs or bikes to get onto the field safely.
Mobile Police Station
This visit was a success with PC Paul Browne particularly pleased with the number of people who took the opportunity to engage with him on the day.
Airband – Ultrafast Fibre Broadband
Ditto Airband’s pop-up on the Green last week. More potential subscribers were signed up. If you haven’t indicated your support for the scheme, please go to the village website for more information and to sign up.
Housing Development in Fladbury
In order to understand the general feeling about any new housing development in the village, we will be circulating by email, on the website and on the village Facebook site, a short questionnaire on this matter. Please look out for this and take a few minutes to provide your response.
Parish Councillor by Co-Option
If you’re interested, please email me for more details and an application form.
Network Rail – River Avon Bridge
Network Rail estimate that the work should be completed towards the end of August at the latest but hopefully sooner.
Next Meeting
We don’t meet in August and so the next meeting will be on Monday, September 20th, 7.00 pm in the pavilion.

PEOPLE
· Having been part of the Five Alive parish for over 50 years, Richard and Maggie Mumford are now living at The Birches, Hawbridge, Stoulton, Worcs. WR7 4RJ. Tel: 01905 841860. Every good wish to Richard and Maggie in their new home and we look forward to seeing them as they continue to worship in the Five Alive parish.
· One-time members of Fladbury & Moor WI met to celebrate over 100 years of the WI in Fladbury, with a tea party in Geraldine’s beautiful garden in Fladbury on the banks of the Avon. The afternoon was very hot, the welcome was very warm, sitting under the garden trees was very cool, the chat was very fulsome and the cool drinks and scones and cakes were very delicious! Marilyn of Lower Moor, most recent President, presented a small silver cup to longest member and one-time president Louise of Fladbury and then thanked all who had planned the party.
· Michelle Brotherton, senior paramedic living in Fladbury, put the following official notice on facebook….
It’s currently unbelievably busy across the West Midlands. Our staff, like our NHS colleagues in hospital across the Region, are working flat out to see patients as quickly as possible.
If you’ve got an urgent health concern which isn’t an emergency, we ask that you use 111.nhs.uk for NHS health advice (or ring 111)
Called 999 and waiting for an ambulance? Please don’t call us back asking for an arrival time as we can’t give you one. Only call us back if the patient’s condition worsens or you want to cancel our help.
LATERAL FLOW TESTS
As part of continuing Community Support, Simon Taylor (at the butcher’s shop) has agreed to becoming a Community Collection point for Lateral Flow Test Kits. These are free of charge and customers will be allowed to take up to 2 packs at a time of these kits. This service will be available from today 22 July. Lateral flow tests can help to drive down the spread of COVID-19. Rapid lateral flow tests give a quick result. They can find positive cases with high levels of virus that are easy to transmit to others, helping to intercept and reduce further infections.

MORE ABOUT BUSSES….
Following the report in last week’s KIT regarding the unexpected withdrawal of the weekly Tesco bus service, John Bolt is attempting to establish the reasons for this and whether it is likely to be reinstated. We hope to be able to report back shortly.
In the meantime we have learnt that some of our neighbouring villages have teamed up with Pershore Volunteers to operate a community bus service, providing a weekly door to door pick up and drop off shopping trip for those who are registered to the scheme. Our Parish Council have agreed to look into how this is funded and whether it could work for Fladbury. As with the service bus, its viability depends on having sufficient support. If you would like to be registered as a possible user of this service, and have not already done so, you can contact John Bolt on 860768 or myself (Jane on 860531).
