CLOTHES ETC FOR AFGHAN REFUGEES
Many thanks to all who donated clothes and equipment last weekend for Afghan refugees and helped with sorting and transport. Paul and Alison Jeanes of Lower Moor emailed “We have collected around 7 car loads of clothing, bedding and toiletries from local churches yesterday and today and dropped them off at Teams4u warehouse in Evesham. The Evesham Vale Welcomes Refugees volunteers have been overwhelmed with donations and the warehouse looks a little full!”
SHOEBOX APPEAL
Each year we run a nationwide shoebox appeal to provide Christmas gifts to vulnerable children and families in Eastern Europe with the charity T4U “real people making a real difference”. These are simple gifts given out with ‘No strings attached’ in countries including Romania, Belarus, Bosnia, Moldova and Georgia. Leaflets are available from the back of churches, with instructions on how to cover your boxes and what to put inside. We will set up delivery points in each of the Five Alive villages from which they will be collected during October and November and put into our processing warehouse in Evesham and then on to their destination. Further information can be found at www.teams4u.com and in the October KIT. FLADBURY CRICKET CLUB
The final Cotswold Hills League game last Saturday saw Fladbury lose by 60 runs to fellow strugglers Alcester & Ragley rounding off a very disappointing season. One or two of this year’s new recruits are now though beginning to show some potential with Will Roberts achieving his highest score of the season in that last match.
Sunday’s home fixture was changed at the last minute, as Pebble Mill were unable to field a side, with Eckington stepping in as opponents at short notice. The story was a similar one to the day before with Fladbury, batting second, finishing 54 runs shy of the 186 posted by the visitors. Not quite a half century for Nick Mytton though. Arriving at the final (40th) over of the Fladbury innings, Nick, Fladbury’s top scorer on 49, found himself at the non-striker’s end. On strike Lee Poultney, who had himself reached 20 not out, defended the last 6 balls in text book fashion and with grim determination, to bat out a maiden over and leave his partner, steam clearly visible from the ears, high and dry on 49 not out.
On Saturday 4 September there is an INTER CLUB DAY at Fladbury starting around 1pm. Two teams, made up from Fladbury players and invitees and hopefully fairly equally balanced, will contest a 40 over match. There will be a Barbeque, bouncy castle, raffle and refreshments etc. ALL ARE WELCOME.
Sunday’s game is at Harvington starting at 1.30pm.
As this is the last cricket notice of the year there remains only one further fixture in the season to tell you about which will take place at Fladbury on Sunday 12th September at 1.30pm against Christchurch.

FLADBURY CRICKET CLUB
Due to persistent rain, Saturday’s game at Fladbury was reduced to 20 overs which Southam won by 7 wickets. This meant that they had at the same time clinched the League title. Sunday’s match at Clent was cancelled.
The cricket became all too insignificant when news broke of the tragic loss last week of 22 year old Laurence Chinn- Brown. Laurence played on a number of occasions for Fladbury in the last 2 years of covid restricted cricket seasons, but was keen to play more. He was very well liked and everyone at Fladbury Cricket Club wish to extend their sympathy and wishes of love to the whole family at this sad time.
The final League game of the season takes place at Ragley Hall this coming Saturday 28 August against Alcester& Ragley CC while on Sunday 29 August starting at 2pm Fladbury host Pebble Mill in a 40 over match.

100 YEARS OLD ON TUESDAY!
Congratulations to Jean Quarterman of Sandys Close who will be 100 years old on Tuesday 24 August. Born in 1921 in a small mining village called Pelsall, Jean went to the village school and then boarding school in Malvern before training to be a Norland Nanny. During the war, she looked after families all over England before working at a nursery in Kidderminster. Whilst staying with friends in Great Witley, she met Alan who was on leave from the Navy. They got married and lived in Kidderminster where Margaret was born and then they lived in Martley where Beth was born. Alan became head of a school in Astley before being appointed Headmaster of the then Fladbury Infant and Junior School and Jean and Alan and their daughters moved on New Year’s Eve 1965 into the School House, alongside the Churchyard – their neighbours were very quiet! Fladbury had 2 pubs, a butchers, a post office cum shop and a general store. The train stopped calling at Fladbury just as they moved in so they caught one of many buses to Pershore to catch the train, which did not stop in Pershore all that often.
Jean belonged to the WI and the Mothers Union. She set up the baby clinic which doubled as a meeting place for young mums and she and Mrs Smithaman started the Silver Lining club for the elderly. Along with other ladies in the village, she baked cakes for the first Open Gardens which sold out on the first day so they went home to do another big bake for the next day. There were dances, whist drives, village fetes , Christmas fairs – Jean was always in the middle ,doing something – and can remember who was at Fladbury School when Alan was Headmaster!
To celebrate the occasion, Jean and her family, including Jean’s 5 great-grandchildren, are gathering together for the first time in many years. If you would like to share in the celebration, it will be
Open House on Tuesday 24 August from 1pm to 3pm at 5 Sandys Close, Fladbury – but no presents please – just your presence!
REST IN PEACE
· Donations in memory of Chris North, who died in April aged 81, were sent to St Francis Hospital, Katete, Zambia where Chris and Bill lived for many years. Bill writes “I have now received a note of deep appreciation and thanks from St Francis for the numerous donations which were given in memory of Chris. It seems to have taken them a while but they are deep in the Zambian bush! Jo, Liz, Kate and I are also hugely grateful for your generosity and for the love shown for Chris. Bless you all”
· David Wynn, who died in July aged 84, was remembered at the service of thanksgiving on Tuesday by his friend and neighbour Tim Willis who in his eulogy included “David worked to renovate Fladbury Mill. This included reinstating the electricity generating turbine and restoring and flood-proofing the Mill and surrounding grounds. Life at the Mill was never dull; David and Angela (who died in 2018 aged 82) found all sorts of things had floated downstream and became stuck on the ‘grids’ of the waterwheel and they were cut off by the major floods in Easter 1998 and July 2007….on the latter occasion they were marooned in the bedrooms of the Mill for 4 days….together with Misty the dog! David and Angela were centrally involved in initiating the annual Fladbury ‘open gardens’ Walkabout weekends”
CHARLTON CHATTERY will meet in The Old Schoolroom tomorrow Friday 20th August 2.30pm to 4.00pm with coffee, tea, cakes and good company. There will be information on how you can help with The Fladbury Flow. This month there will also be a raffle. Passports from non-Charlton residents NOT required!

FLADBURY CRICKET CLUB
Fladbury’s woes in the Cotswold Hills League continued on Saturday at Tanworth who made 225 for 7 wickets from their 40 overs. In reply Fladbury could only muster 154 all out with Simon Purfield top scoring on 48 having spent the majority of the season on the sidelines injured.
Next season the League system is to be reorganized with no relegation this year from Division 4, which is a stroke of luck for Fladbury who are firmly rooted one off the bottom with just 2 games remaining. Instead all the teams in Divisions 4 and 5 will be joined and split again on a geographical basis to form two new leagues, Division 4 North and Division 4 South.
Last Sunday, batting second, Fladbury finished all out 106 runs short of Old Georgians total of 247 for 4. An unremarkable game of which I shall say little. There was however one notable performance by a Fladbury player and it came from an unlikely source. Diego Gutierrez, who apart from taking an outstanding catch in the deep, then went on to score 56 with the bat – surely he must be the first Spaniard in the Club’s history to do so. Diego’s favoured sport is Handball which he has played at a high level in Spain and although it must be said he is not yet totally au fait with many of the Laws of Cricket it seems he will be a useful addition.
This weekend Saturday 21 August a League match is at home to the leaders Southam starting at 1.30pm while on Sunday Fladbury travel to Clent for a 40 over game.
Even at this late stage of the season it is worth mentioning that the Club is still desperately in need of more players. Anyone interested should please make themselves known
