Keeping In Touch 65

NO MORE FISH & CHIPS ON THURSDAYS

From food genie Vicky – As our normal pitches have now reopened, we are unfortunately unable to commit to our Thursday slot in Fladbury but we are going to try and arrange a monthly visit instead, possibly late in the Autumn. Thanks for your custom during lockdown, with best wishes, Vicky.

And our thanks to Vicky and colleagues for keeping us fish-and-chipped during lockdown!

BUT CAFE CRAYCOMBE RE-OPENING!

We are on site doing some renovation and decorating in preparation for when we are allowed to open for inside service in May. In the mean time, we plan to open up while we do this work, on a restricted but progressive basis, as follows – from today, Thursday 15 April, a very basic take away and outside table service offer will be available – a longer menu will be introduced when possible. Hours are as pre lockdown – Tuesday to Saturday inclusive from 10am to 3pm – closed Sunday and Monday for now but this may alter as life returns to normal. Unfortunately, we have to mention the caveat that service will be at the mercy of the great British weather so, when the elements look questionable, please do ring before coming – telephone 0136 860732. For other enquiries, please email cafecraycombe@aol.com

Finally, we at Cafe Craycombe were all very saddened to hear of the passing of Chris North.  Chris was a regular at the café and we send our condolences to her family and friends.   Colin Cumbers

Fladbury Church – BOOKS -many of us have enjoyed picking up a book from the bookstand in Fladbury Church. Covid guidance requires us to remove all paper literature from churches which also means books. Regretfully we are not able to have a bookstand in church at present and may we therefore ask respectfully that no books are left at church. Our thanks.

PAINTED PEBBLES

From Vivien Taylor of Butt Furlong

My grandchildren painted pebbles and placed them in the pathway at the Church. They then went into the church and said “wow” when they heard the organist playing.  He was very friendly and polite. They said their Easter prayers and then we left. My grandson wondered where the rest of the painted pebbles were?? Lovely idea! We will be back for another visit.             Vivien

HOUSES WANTED

·         We are a young family of 4 who have lived in the village for the past 5 years (renting a property on Paynes Lane). Our children attend Fladbury first school and we are now in the position to buy our first home, which would be the dream to stay in the village. Any support in achieving our dream would be greatly received. Kindest regards, Gemma & Phil Ryder – phone 07973 843852

·         I am hoping to downsize – if anyone has a smaller 2-bedroomed property in Fladbury they are thinking of selling, please let me know Jane, tel: 860531 or email pjbugg@btinternet.com

·         I also know of someone who is looking for a bigger property in the area with a large garden

FLADBURY PARISH COUNCIL

Annual Meeting

Due to the official period of mourning for HRH Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Annual Parish meeting will not now take place on Monday, April 19th as previously notified. Although the meeting itself falls outside the period of mourning, the legal notice of seven days outside that period falls within and thus legally the meeting cannot be held. More information will follow in due course.

Network Rail – River Avon Bridge

The Network Rail project to repair the railway bridge over the River Avon at Fladbury will start in earnest next Monday 19th April.

  • The materials for the haul road during the first couple of weeks of the project will access Charlton from the A46 at Hinton via Haselor Lane, then Boston/Yessell Lanes before accessing the farm tracks via Whitehouse Farm in Ryden Lane. On an ongoing basis any large heavy deliveries will use the Whitehouse Farm as an access point but smaller ones will use Sidings Lane.
  • This means that, in theory, none of the hgv traffic will come through Fladbury.
  • Initially the site equipment/offices/welfare cabins etc will be set up and a haul road from Sidings Lane in Charlton to the railway bridge will be created.

It has been agreed with Network Rail that:

  • 5mph signage will be erected on Sidings Lane and vehicles using other tracks will have a similar maximum speed
  • Currently there is no agreement for the landowner to retain the haul road material, so it will be removed from site at the end of the project
  • Whitehouse Farm will be used for HGV deliveries to site this includes stone deliveries
  • Sidings Lane will be used by lighter weight vehicles only, a water bowser will be used when necessary
  • Footpath at the railway bridge will be closed between 25 May – 6 June 2021
  • The other footpaths do not come near to the haul road, but signage will be posted around the area
  • Works will commence on the 19 April to install the haul road and set up the compound.
  • The haulage company have been briefed on the requirement to drive at no more than 20mph through the villages for Fladbury, Charlton and Cropthorne

FLADBURY VILLAGE EVENT

The Fladbury Village Event will be on Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 July – mostly on the Saturday – to celebrate the end of lockdown (hopefully), to celebrate village life and to get to know each other – including newcomers to the village. This is NOT the Walkabout and is not a corporate fundraiser and does not depend on booking outside entertainers or outside stallholders. It will be home grown and home produced – might even include an exhibition of what you created during lockdown – so perhaps you might have to get it finished before July!

WILDLIFE

v  RSPB have results of the Big Garden Birdwatch held at the end of January. Although both greenfinch and chaffinch numbers have fallen, it was a good year for blackbirds and robins. Way down the Birdwatch list are the least seen birds – did a little owl (at number 67), skylark (at number 73) or teal (at number 80) visit your garden?

v  From Roger and Moyagh Hemming of Station Road – Last weekend & on Tuesday we had our first Brimstone  ( Gonepteryx rhamni ) & our first Orange-tip ( Anthocharis cardamines ), back in the late 70 s, not reckoned to be on the wing until late May early June. These days it seems to have advanced by 2 or 3 weeks.Notwithstanding the late frosts it looks like Spring is just over the horizon at last.??

SOME DATES TO NOTE…..

Saturday 1 May – Plant Sale for Alzheimer’s Research UK

Thursday 6 May – local elections – post office closed in Lower Moor

Saturday 3 & Sunday 4 July – Fladbury Village event – more information coming soon!

A QUOTE from Jenni Murray’s article in Saga magazine

‘May be my friend has a point and it’s time to dig out a decent outfit, put on some slap and get back out there. I might leave if for a bit, but none of us must forget that company is crucial for human beings. We have to pick ourselves up and start all over again.’

KEEP IN TOUCH….
